>>> 4-3-3 is a defensive set up? None of Moyes, Bilic or Alladyce ever played a 4-3-3 consistently.

Don't want to get into all that again. But in my view Bilic and Allardyce played the same 4-3-3 / 4-1-4-1 throughout their time at the club. We play a packed midfield, two wide players and one striker. It's one of the less flexible, more defensively minded shapes. Of course you can be attacking with it too like any shape, and that's why I prefer it to the utter nonsense Pellegrini was trying at the start of the season. The question really is why you need to pay such big bucks to Pellegrini to play in such a standard shape.

I think a way to make it more attacking would be to play Anderson or Snodgrass as CMs instead of Obiang or Noble. I think experimenting with that would be a good idea for matches where we have to break down an opposition.

I think Masuaku's antics just after they scored show he knows he fucked up.

His best might not have stopped the goal, but he didn't do his best.

Re: Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread FT 1-0
Well, it looks to some on here that there is a league called the we played better league. In this construct goals do not count but what does is someone's subjective claret and blue glasses view.

My opinion is that we could have won that game but a combination of inaccuracy in front of goal and a defensive lapse cost us. Brighton having got the lead were more intent on defending it than increasing it, as Alex mentioned, and they got away with three points. By the way Hughton spoke after the game we were clearly a harder task for Brighton to beat than ManU.

I do agree in that I don't know why Noble has to be in that position or Yarmolenko honestly. They should just be higher up the pitch and let Rice and the defence build up. I found that a constant problem with Noble in the match, it was one of the major reasons imo that we were less effective than eg the Everton game.

35% possession at HOME, Brighton had, 9 shots to our 17, 2 corners to our 9, against a team who has been in back to back relegation battles in the previous 2 seasons.

All the STATS tell the story of what most of us saw. Including THEIR manager.

We have Alex V and Comma telling us otherwise.

Spot on. And created the clearer chances.

I feel a lot better about this loss though as opposed to say the Bournemouth and / or Wolves games.

They were spineless and disorganised.

You can see we are much better now. Creating chanes and look a lot harder to score against. Obviously MP's methods are starting to take root. Still a lot of work to do though.

You don't think there's anything wrong with Noble's pass??

Well there wasn't a lot fucking right with it. He's got three better options than playing it into a bloke with back to goal and marked.

He could play it to Zaba's feet. Play it over the top into space for Zaba to run onto. Or he could just turn around and give it back to CB.

It's just an utterly pointless ball, serves no purpose other than put pressure on Yarma and is basically the worst of 4 options.

The problem it's almost like the pass wasn't the cause of the goal. But it's the start of the domino effect. Just don't play fucking shitty pointless passes in the first place and the domino's don't start falling. That's my point.

We'd ridden the early tide of their pressure and we had started to get more ball and look comfortable. It's our free-kick and just such a pointless risk when there are so many other safer options. Game management is key and like against Wolves we just do silly stuff out of the blue and at that level you get punished.

Masuaku could have prevented the goal had he made up the ground and then got goal-side. Not sure what he was doing. It sort of looks like he may be waiting to see if Murray goes off-side? It's odd. He gets with him and then trots alongside. You have to get goal-side. I played left back my whole life. And I was taught to tuck in and get goal-side at the age of 9 or 10.

So frustrating to see top level players doing this sort of stuff.

Exactly. We're not even 10 games into his tenure yet, and his trying to completely change the ethos at the club, it's going to take time. We clearly have a bit of a problem breaking down teams who set up like we have previously, sticking men behind the ball, but it will come.

Alex is just doing his normal thing, he's not worth engaging with but it's good to call him out on the fact he did not make a single post on our best team performance in fuck knows how long against Man Utd.

Eerie - That's on the back of beating Everton 3 - 1 at Goodison where we never win, nearly beating Chelsea (who have been impressive under Sarri) and outplaying Man Utd!

If we happen to beat the Yids next match, there will be something to complain about!

Slightly unfair to Brighton I think, who in the first 25 mins were pretty much even with us on possession and knocking it around quite well. I think their fans would say their mistake was not carrying on with the approach and letting us back into the match. Though given the result its justified.

On changes in approach, any improvements are most welcome and long overdue but we don't have to be cheerleaders for any of it. To deserve credit it has to operate successfully against sides who make themselves tough to beat. Pellegrini has seen his initial approach this season suffer massively - the response is the current shape we're playing which is a pretty standard defensive set-up in this league and easily recognisable from our previous managers. Is it a step forward? We'll have to see over the season.

It's hilarious really, we've had to endure the team playing the most disgusting brand of football for the majority of the last decade, sticking men behind the ball and hoping for a lucky goal on the break, and everyone hates it.

We get in a manager who is trying to completely change the ethos, and slowly but surely is getting us to keep the ball and play it on the ground, yet people want to give props to Brighton, who played the style of football that everyone hated.

YOU HAVE TO LAUGH
